Contingency Management
Contingency management (CM) is a behavioral treatment that uses tangible, positive rewards to reinforce healthy behaviors, such as staying substance-free. It is currently the most effective evidence-based treatment available for methamphetamine and other stimulant use disorders.
How It Works
There are no FDA-approved medications for methamphetamine use disorder, which makes contingency management one of the strongest tools available. Patients receive incentives, such as vouchers or small prizes, for meeting treatment goals like attending appointments and testing negative for drug use.
Reinforces positive behavior change through immediate, tangible rewards
Rewards typically increase in value with continued progress
Often paired with counseling and peer support for the best outcomes
Backed by decades of research showing improved treatment retention and reduced drug use
